Spring Cleaning Your Makeup Bag

What You Should Toss and What you Should Hang Onto

By Mia | KIAH TV 39 Houston | May 10, 2010

As Spring quickly comes to an end it's a great time to do some Spring cleaning. It's easy for our makeup bags to get cluttered and we've brought in the personal makeup artist to Houston's high society to show us everything we need to know about cleaning out our makeup bags.

First things first, toss anything that's discolored or smell's funny. Discoloration is a sure fire sign that a product is old and should no longer be used. Things like face powder and eye shadows don't usually go bad because there powder based. So if an eye shadow breaks instead of disposing it, simply put the shadow in a little container with a lid.

A lot of making your makeup last is based on how you use it. Mascara for example can dry out easily so it's important to twirl your wand inside the tube as opposed to pumping it. When you pump it air gets into the tube and can take a lot of time off the life of your product. If you just bought the mascara but it seems dry it's ok to put just a little bit of water into the tube to try and moisten it back up.

Some of Renee's favorite products are ones that are made to wear for long periods of time. Nowadays things like clutches are very popular but that doesn't leave us with much room to store your makeup must haves. Wearing makeup that's intended to last all day eliminates needing to always carry makeup for touch ups.

The most important thing to remember is less is more, if you don't have to have it, leave it out of your makeup bag.
